Innocence is Beautiful

Many years ago, while preparing for a “Friends of the River” rafting trip, I saw two people entering the Stanislaus River* on inner tubes. As my friends and I watched the couple in amazement and concern I turned and said “Innocence is beautiful”.

On a later trip, after the state started to fill the reservoir, the water back-flooded the river drowning trees and turning white water into swamp. We sang “Innocence is Beautiful”, a song I had written for the river. Tears ran down our faces as a speedboat passed us in the man-made still water.

To be innocent is to be open to adventure, to risk and even to sadness. So often, we are told that to be emotional is to be immature. It is our ability to feel that defines our humanity. Be willing to be awkward and even silly. Let maturity encompass unfiltered expressions.

There will be those who will laugh at you and attempt to gain advantage from your vulnerability. Laugh with them and soon their laughter will subside. Listen to the conversations of children and let their mastery of nothing be your guide.

Rain falls, eyes blink, earth spins

So much that cannot be controlled

Yet we pretend to be in charge

Always trying on big shoes
